Michigan Bulb

Last week I received my order from the Michigan Bulb Company. This was a small order, just 2 starts of the Double Decker Pink Coneflower, (pictured left) and 3 bulbs of Boogie Woogie Lily Trees. The lily tree bulbs were HUGE. I wish I would have photographed them before planting because they were quite impressive and pretty compared to other bulbs I've seen. I took a risk planting them in my backyard close to the house, hoping that they'll make for a pretty view next to my kitchen window, although it only gets about 6 hrs of afternoon sun... I may move them next year after seeing how they do this season. I planted one pink coneflower in the backyard also, and one in the front in my island where the street lantern is. The only problem with these perrenials is that I imagine it will take a year or two before they reach their mature height and glory. I'm still counting down the days until the last frost date so I can get my favorite annuals like wave petunias and sweet potato vine at the garden center.
One concern I have is all these pesky rabbits. They are all over my backyard, and I've heard of them eating my neighbors petunias already! I know normally you'd put a fence around vegetables, but I think that would look too silly around a flower garden! The coneflowers however, are deer (and I imagine)/rabbit resistant. We'll see if that holds true. Pictured below are the Lily trees, they grow to about 3' the first year, and about a foot each year after up to 5'-6'.

  1. Okay, Shawn has an obsession with lilly's. I like them too, but we have a billion of them. I can't believe how you love to garden. You should have been a horticulure major or a botinist. We could have had so much fun. Good luck with those bunnies. At least they are cute. Let me know how your garden goes. I have some beets, carrots, tomatoes, and peppers this year along with my flowers. I'm hopeing it will be easier now that I'm not nine + mo pregnant.
