Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico. A tropical island paradise in the atlantic ocean, With the benefit of being a territory of the United States. The question: Should it make the Top 10 List? There are many different angles to consider. Here are a few, in no particular order...

1. The Adventure.
Pros: Amazing locations, sunshine, miles upon miles of white sand beaches, ocean breeze, sunshine, a rain forest, sunshine, mountains, awesome weather year round (no more snow shoveling!). The culture, the great weather, did I mention the average annual temperature is 80 degrees?
Cons: I think 6 months a year of hurricane season might be a little more adventure than I had in mind.

2.The Language.
Pros: While the native language is Spanish, nearly everyone speaks english. Matt would love to speak Spanish again. It would be a great opportunity to improve my spanish. The kids could learn spanish.
Cons: Suppose I mess up some simple spanish phrase, like when missionaries tell experiences in their homecoming talks about during the dinner prayer when they prayed to "please bless the toilet."

3. The Accomodations.
Pros: We could buy a condo. Less square footage means less for me to clean.
Cons: The possibility of crazy neighbors on the other side of the wall.

4. The Sacrifice.
Pros: A 5 year commitment and then we'd have our choice of locations to relocate to.
Cons: A 5 year commitment.

5. The Distance
Pros: We could enjoy a place we probably would never go otherwise. Family would have a good reason to vacation in PR.
Cons: Family would have a good reason to vacation in PR. jk! A few long plane rides back to the midwest.

Anyhoo-- the debate continues. Do the pros outweigh the cons, or vice versa.

You know, if you don't want family to come, I can always pose as "Conchita", the hard-working-for-cheap-pay-who-smells-like-a-spicy-taco maid:)

Wowie! Puerto Rico, that would be awesome! I would definitely jump on that, but for one thing... 5 years.... that's kind of a long time! =) But what stories you could tell... I don't know, I think it might be worth it. =) By the way, my husband does a mean Puerto Rican accent. you'll have to hear it one day. hehe.

Go for it! You will really miss out on a great experience if you don't go - any place is wonderful if you make it so. I speak from (MUCH) experience as far as moving to new and strange places. I will be forever grateful for my mom not letting me stay in "good 'ole" Wilson Creek - I would have missed so much! Indiana's ice storms, our backyard forest, Lake Cicero, an out in the middle of a cornfield-school lunch made from scratch kind of middle school. And from Texas, buckets of frogs, raising parakeets, wonderfully kind people of all races, fun in the bathtub hiding from tornadoes. The list goes on and I wouldn't trade any of it. Don't be afraid - jump at the opportunity!

Go for it! In our experience of moving to "the unknown" (and we have had MUCH experience), we have enjoyed each new adventure. And that is just what we called each one, a new adventure. I don't think any of the kids whould trade the experiences they had. We learned about fireflies, nature, ice storms, our own backyard forest, home-cooked school lunches from a school in the middle of a corn field. From Texas, friendly people of every race, buckets of frogs, tarantulas, backyard alleys, raising parakeet's, etc. It's enlightening and educational for kids (and adults) to experience as much as possible. I'm eternally grateful to my mom for not letting me stay in good 'ole safe Wilson Creek - I would have missed so much!
