Santa Baby

Hohoho, Merry Christmas. There is few more popular holiday traditions for children in December than a visit to see Santa Claus. Why is it so important for parents to stand in line to take their child to sit on Santa's lap so they can tell him what they want for Christmas? All year long, we're telling our kids: "Don't talk to strangers", and "stranger danger". Yet, we're all smiles and changing our tune, trying to drag some unrelentant preschoolers to sit on a lap of a very hairy and oddly dressed fat man. What logic is there? Tradition. (fiddler on the roof music here:-)) and of course all parents want a picture to commemorate the event. This year at a family christmas party where Santa was to be in attendance, I prepared my almost 4 year old for the experience. After a long talk, bribery that she had to personally tell santa what she wanted so he would know what to bring her, and encouragement to be brave, she agreed. What a great picture I have of her finally sitting on Santa's lap (that I will post when I eventually download my holiday pics to the computer). She is holding as still as possible, and sitting on the very edge of his knee, with a very weary expression on her face. Why all this madness? Tradition.... Tradition!
